The primary aim of the Life+ Return of Rural Wetlands project is to form a foundation for the future programme on the restoration, management and establishment of wetland habitats. This programme will work on a local level in a landowner-oriented way that encourages locals to participate.
The objective of our nationwide demonstration and development project is to create a model wetland that boosts biodiversity in collaboration with locals in every province in Finland, to inspire people to manage the wetland areas in their home districts and to improve the cooperation of interest groups working with wetland-related issues.
The Rural Wetlands -projects demonstrative wetlands, awareness raising, education and dissemination activities has been productive. The interest towards wetlands has increased throughout Finland and new projects by landowners and hunters are rising in many villages.
Finnish Wildlife Agency is thankful for all landowners and other people who joined the project activities as well as co-financiers for making this project such a success.
The Life+ Return of Rural Wetlands project promotes the establishment, restoration and management of wetlands, the most important habitats for waterfowl, in the everyday environments of agricultural and forest areas.
The examples in the nationwide network of model wetlands and our active communication, guidance and the kosteikko.fi website help us to raise citizens’ awareness of the value of wetlands, for example, to biodiversity, water birds and the protection of waters.
The model wetlands that have been established together with landowners, associations and companies act as practical examples and inspire operators in the neighbourhood to launch their own wetland projects.
